We've all heard the old adage that practice makes perfect. Firefighters, however, take that one step further. Because we can make the difference between life and death, practice must be done until you can't get it wrong. The members of Volunteer Engine & Hose Co. recently completed a vehicle extrication and stabilization drill using two vehicles that were generously donated to us for training. Proper training techniques can't always be learned by reading a book. In the fire service, hands-on training prepares crews for real-life scenarios and allows you to develop the skills needed to be a safe and effective rescuer. And getting scrap vehicles to tear apart can be hard to come by, so when we get the opportunity we take full advantage.

What is vehicle extrication?
Vehicle extrication is the work of removing a vehicle from around a person who has been involved in an accident. It is necessary when the normal means of getting out of the vehicle are not possible, whether the frame of the car is too damaged or because the person is impinged inside or under the vehicle.
