Westchester County Introduces New Recruitment Initiative

Recently, Westchester County Executive George Latimer shared information on a new program that will assist volunteer fire departments and emergency medical service organizations recruit and retain members as well as provide opportunities for financial assistance for volunteers continuing their education. Known as the Westchester Volunteer Higher Education Recruitment & Retention Opportunity (HERRO), this program will provide those who have active status within a volunteer emergency service organization tuition reimbursement and loan repayment assistance.

According to the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services (WCDES), "Fire and EMS Volunteers are eligible for up to $6,000 annually in tuition reimbursement or student loan repayment assistance."

HERRO Eligibility requirements:
-must be an active member of a volunteer fire department, fire company, fire district, or EMS agency for one year
-must maintain acceptable volunteer activity and training levels as set by the organization
-verification from the member's volunteer organization
