The Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department held its annual bailout recertification training. As of December 10th, 2019, 79 of the Department’s interior firefighters practiced self-rescue techniques using their PES (personal escape systems) consisting of a bag in the firefighters pocket housing a hook, a rope or webbing, and a sliding mechanism. All 79 firefighters completed four practice slides and completed over 250 man hours of training while practicing these techniques. The goal of the training is to ensure we never have to use these devices in a real life situation. However, with today’s construction, fuels, and fire growth, the chance is higher that we are going to be operating within seconds of potential disaster. We must prepare ourselves to be aware of changing conditions and to know what procedures to take to ensure our safety on the fireground.
