Ask your mom, dad or another grown-up to sit down with you and make a fire escape plan!   You'll need to get a piece of paper or grid paper if you have it and draw a floor plan of your home, showing all the rooms.

On this plan draw arrows from each room, showing two escape routes out of each room, using the windows and doors.

Don't forget to choose a meeting place that everyone can remember!  The meeting place should be safe and easy to get to and also permanent - such as a tree or a streetlight.

Now you and your family are ready to practice your fire drill.   Practice your escape plan several times a year, both during the day and at night.

Your drawing should look something like the one below:

    Always remember..
    • Stay low!  Roll out of bed and crawl to the door.
    • Check the door for heat with the back of your hand.
    • If it is hot, turn around and use your other way out.
    • If it is cool open the door slowly, and crawl out of the house.
    • If you encounter smoke, turn around and use another way out!
    • NEVER hide!  You must escape!
    • Once you are outside NEVER go back inside.
    • Make sure someone knows to call 911 for help!
    • Wait at your meeting place till help arrives!
